CASCAIS - THE TOWN OF KINGS AND FISHES

Ola! Because I've been for two times in Cascais, I'll tell you a few things about this amazing place. This is a summer destination that you should think about!

Cascais is the premier resort town of the Lisbon coastline that has responsibly developed around a charming and historic town. The town is the perfect holiday destination for those tourists who want more than just a good beach and hot weather for their holiday. Cascais is ideally situated close to Lisbon, with its numerous tourist attraction and outstanding nightlife, while to the north is the picturesque town of Sintra and the stunning hills of the Serra de Sintra national park. Cascais offers a variety of excellent beaches, from calm family friendly through to wild and rugged surfing paradises. Cascais makes for a fantastic holiday destination in Portugal, so let me show to you this gem of location.

Short history

Unlike many other Mediterranean beach resorts, which suddenly sprung up with the advent of mass tourism, Cascais has been an established holiday destination since the early 19th century. The King of Portugal choose Cascais Portugal as his summer retreat and the high society of Portugal flocked to follow him. They constructed grand residences, fine parks and lavish entertainment venues which gave rise to Cascais’ popular nickname “the town of kings and fishes”. This trend of high society has continued through to the present day with many of Lisbon’s rich and famous living close to the town.

Beaches of Cascais Portugal

The coastline surrounding Cascais has a variety of stunning beaches, which are able to cater for all styles of tourist. There are family orientated beaches with calm, clean bathing waters and soft golden sands and great facilities, the best example is Carcavelos beach. This beach is only a 10 minute train ride away.
For the more adventurous there are wild and rugged surfing beaches such as Praia Guincho. This beach is considered to have the best swell and waves in Portugal and is combined with an almost constant breeze perfect for surfing, body boarding and kite surfing. All of these beaches are within a short distance of Cascais and are connected via the inexpensive public transport network.

Attractions and facilities

In the town there are traditional authentic Portuguese restaurants with a smattering of more exotic cuisines but the whole area retains the atmosphere of class and maturity. Cascais is not a resort for groups looking for cheap drink; it is firmly aimed at couples (of all ages) and young families. Cascais has numerous small museums and stately homes which can easily fill a day for those visors who tire of the glorious beaches. The local government of Cascais has smartly channeled this tourist revenue into enhancing the resort; all museums and stately homes are free and the parks are wonderfully maintained. Cascais is a resort that combines class, history with wonderful beaches and is a fantastic destination for a holiday and this great reputation was confirmed by the Lonely Planet travel guides.

Don't put the future on hold to talk to the past. Remember it has nothing new to say. The future needs your attention right now. It has something beautiful to offer you, but first ... you must let go of the past in order to receive it. The future depends on what you do in the present! Live, laugh, love and don't forget, you're pretty fucking awesome!
